Exodus 16:4,31 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not … The house of Israel called it manna; it was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.

It’s a pretty well understood fact that, other than during the odd time of fasting, we pretty much need to eat food every day or we’ll starve. In fact, most of us, eat it three times a day. Why is it then, that we think we can ignore spiritual food, and still get by, hmm?

Just after they escaped from slavery in Egypt, the nation of Israel was wandering around in a place called, literally, “the wilderness of Sin” (Exodus 16:1).

They were grumbling and complaining, because there was no food in the wilderness, so God told Moses that He was going to rain bread down on them.

It sounds very tasty, doesn’t it? And nourishing. They called it “manna”, which literally meant “What is this?!” But importantly, the manna would come down fresh each day and would only last for a single day (two days on the Sabbath so they wouldn’t have to work). So trusting in God for their food was a day-by-day proposition. In many respects, all these years on, nothing much has changed.

Jesus said, “I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me will never be hungry.” (John 6:35). Jesus is also called the Word of God (in other words the revelation of who God is, God speaking to us).

Why are so many Christians in spiritual starvation today, in the wilderness of sin?! Because they’ve stopped eating the bread of life, the Word of God, each day, every day.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
