Right from when we’re little, getting on with others isn’t always that easy. Playing nice with the other kids can be a challenge, no matter how young or old we are. Why is that? And how can you and I make it just that bit easier, hmm?

Have you ever met someone whose life’s credos is … it’s my way or the highway? Of course you have! We all have and it’s not a lot of fun being with those people. They want to get their own way all the time. They want to impose their views, their ways, their will on those around them.

But put the shoe on the other foot and honestly, in our heart of hearts, we believe that relationships are fine so long as we get our own way. Even living and working under authority – which we all do – is fine until you don’t get your own way. And let’s be honest – most of us don’t react all that well when that happens.

So what’s the secret to getting through that, without on the one hand ruining the relationship and on the other, feeling like a doormat? Have a listen to what God has to say:

1 Corinthians 13:4,5 Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It doesn’t insist on its own way.

There it is right there. The secret to getting on with other people, the secret to living in harmony, in community, the secret even to living under authority, is not insisting on your own way, but laying down the right to have your own way –   willingly, with a good heart, because you value the other person.

Now it’s not always easy, but who ever said that love was going to be easy? There’s always a cost to loving other people.

Love doesn’t insist on its own way.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
