Other than the basics – food, shelter, the bills you really have to pay – what was your last purchase? Come on, what was it? Next question – did you really need it, or did you just want it? Final question – was it worth it?

It seems these days that pretty much everyone has a credit card, or two, or three – and if not a credit card, then some form of mobile payment. The point is that they’ve made it more and more convenient to get credit and spend more than we earn.

Sure, we can go shopping on the weekend without going to the bank for cash on Friday. Great! But somehow, having credit stops us from having to worry so much whether we have enough money to cover our purchase.

The credit limit is like a disconnect between what we spend and what we earn. So we just spend. And really, most people don’t distinguish anymore between what they need and what they just want.

So before you know it, you’re in over your head. The exorbitant interest rates on your debt cut in and, you’re spending your life chasing your tail, never able to make ends meet.

It’s like a millstone around your neck. Is that really what life’s all about?

Jesus said this:

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. (NRSV)

One of the ways that the thief steals, kills and destroys is by getting us in so much debt that all we can focus on is keeping our head above water. And that … that doesn’t sound like much of an abundant life to me.

As Jesus said, you can’t serve both God and money. You have to choose. Don’t spend more than you earn.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
