If there’s one thing that the whole COVID-19 thing has taught us, it’s that the future is far from certain. At the beginning of last year we all had plans that were completely upended by something that quite literally took the world by storm.

It’s funny how certain we can be of things; our plans for the future, our own abilities. We behave as though tomorrow is completely under our control when in fact, nothing could be further from the truth.

Proverbs 27:1,2 Never brag about what you will do in the future; you have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Never praise yourself. Let others do it.

When you think about it, there’s a certain arrogance in bragging about the future – I’m going to do this, I’m going to do that – as though we own it, when in reality our future lies completely and utterly in the hands of God. And that arrogance all too easily leads us into a sense of self that’s way higher than it ought to be. It’s called pride, and it’s ugly to see people talking themselves up, isn’t it? So how do we combat that? How do we make sure we don’t walk down that path? I think Charles Spurgeon puts it best:

The Holy Spirit finds modesty so rare that He takes care to record it. Say much of what the Lord has done for you, but say little of what you have done for the Lord. Do not utter a self-glorifying sentence!

Let’s take a big, deep breath here. Having travelled through what we’ve all been through these past eighteen months, in our heart of hearts let’s make sure that we have our King on His throne.

Never brag about what you will do in the future; you have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Never praise yourself. Let others do it.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
